Selling during a Live is the highest-velocity moment a creator gets. Someone types "link" while you are demonstrating the product, and thirty seconds later that intent is gone.
Automating that moment is possible in 2026 — with two constraints that break naive implementations.
Yes, Private Reply works on Live comments
Meta supports **live_comments** as a webhook field, and comments made during a broadcast can receive a Private Reply addressed by comment ID.
We had to verify this the hard way. Our first implementation hit "The comment is invalid for a private reply" in production, and we initially concluded Meta blocked Private Reply on Lives entirely. That conclusion was wrong — checking the documentation properly showed it is supported during an active broadcast. The failures had other causes.
Worth stating plainly because we got it wrong first: verify against the docs before you design around a limitation.
Constraint 1 — the broadcast must still be running
Once a Live ends, its comment IDs stop accepting private replies. Calls fail.
This creates a nasty edge case. Webhooks are not instant, and a comment made in the final seconds of a broadcast can arrive at your server *after* the Live has closed. Your automation is behaving correctly and still failing.
Constraint 2 — recipient privacy settings
Some users configure Instagram so that businesses cannot message-reply to them. There is no way to detect this before attempting the send, and the error text is the same generic string.
So you cannot distinguish "Live ended" from "user blocked private replies" from the error alone. Which means you need a fallback that handles both.
The fallback design that works
The pattern we settled on:
- Try the Private Reply first — most viewers get a real DM
- On failure, post a public comment reply with the link inline
- Log which path fired so you can see the ratio later
- Never leave the viewer with nothing
A public reply is worse than a DM — less private, harder to attribute, visible to everyone. But it delivers the link, which is the entire point mid-stream. Perfect is the enemy of the sale here.

Subscribe to the right webhook field
A quiet failure mode: live_comments is a separate field from comments.
If your app only subscribes to comments, Live traffic never reaches your integration. From the creator's side this is indistinguishable from the automation being broken — no error, no DM, nothing.
Check both fields are subscribed in your Meta app configuration before your next broadcast, not during it.

A realistic Live setup
- Create a rule with the trigger set to Live comments
- Use short, obvious keywords — "link", "price", "buy" — people type fast while watching
- Write a DM short enough to read on a phone mid-stream
- Test with a second account on a private Live before going live for real
That fourth step is worth the ten minutes. A Live is the worst possible place to discover a webhook misconfiguration.
When to skip this entirely
If you do not sell during Lives, do not build this. Comment and story-reply triggers work whether or not you are broadcasting, and they cover far more of the week.
Live automation is a specialist tool for creators whose revenue clusters around broadcasts. For everyone else it is a nice-to-have that adds a failure surface.
