Instagram is where Indian creators build reach. WhatsApp is where Indian buyers actually pay.
If your DMs regularly turn into "send me your WhatsApp number", you already know this. The question is whether to automate the channel where the money changes hands.

The distinction that decides your whole project
There are two kinds of WhatsApp messages, and conflating them is why most WhatsApp automation projects stall:
Reactive — the customer messaged you first. This opens a 24-hour window in which you can send freeform replies. No template. No approval. No waiting.
Proactive — you message them first. This requires a pre-approved message template, submitted to Meta and reviewed.
Almost every guide leads with templates, which makes WhatsApp automation sound like a compliance project. For creator use cases it usually is not — because the customer messages you first.
If your funnel is "Instagram comment → WhatsApp conversation", you are entirely in reactive territory.
Cloud API vs the free Business app
Two different products with confusingly similar names:
- WhatsApp Business app — free, runs on your phone, offers away messages and quick replies. No API. Fine for one person answering manually.
- WhatsApp Business Cloud API — server-side, real automation, multiple agents, CRM integration, analytics.
If you need keyword-triggered replies, routing, or anything touching your database, you need the Cloud API. If you just want an away message, the free app is genuinely enough — do not over-build.
What it costs in INR
Meta prices per conversation, by category, by country. Two things worth knowing:
- Service conversations — the customer-initiated kind automation handles — are the cheapest category, and Meta has been expanding free allowances for them
- India rates are among the lower ones globally
For most small creators, the Meta cost is not the binding constraint. The platform or BSP fee on top usually is. Check that number before the per-message rate, because at low volume it dominates.

A realistic setup for an Indian creator
- Convert to a WhatsApp Business account and get a dedicated number
- Connect through the Cloud API (directly or via a platform)
- Write keyword replies for your top 5 recurring questions
- Route Instagram comment traffic to WhatsApp with the link in your DM
Step 3 is where the value is. Across the Indian creators we have worked with, the same handful of questions cover most inbound: price, delivery time, COD availability, sizing, and "is this still available". Automating those five recovers hours a week.
What automation should and should not do here
Should: answer FAQs instantly, qualify (city, budget, size), send product links and catalogues, re-engage inside the window.
Should not: pretend to be you in a negotiation, or push promotional content at people who asked a support question. Indian buyers are unusually direct on WhatsApp — they notice a bot pretending, and they disengage.
The pattern that works is AI handling the repetitive layer and escalating to you the moment the conversation gets specific about money.
Where StackPicks AutoDM is on WhatsApp
WhatsApp Business is in private beta. Onboarding is manual — we wire your WABA and number with you on a short call — because self-serve requires Meta App Review for WhatsApp permissions, which is in the queue.
Beta users keep WhatsApp free. That is not a growth-hack framing; it is that we are not going to charge for something we are still onboarding by hand. Request beta access.
